Texas Senate Approves Legislation For Texas State Music Museum Creation

Proposed location of venue is east of the the Bullock Texas State History Museum, a healthy stone's throw from the Texas Capitol building.

AUSTIN, TX — Members of the Texas Senate on Monday approved legislation designed to create the Texas State Music Museum in Austin.

The selected site for the facility is space now being used as a parking lot east of the the Bullock Texas State History Museum, according to Senate Bill 1147 author Kirk Watson, a Democrat from Austin.

Ground is expected to be broken for museum construction in the coming months for the site located on the southeast corner of North Congress Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. The proposed site is blocks from the Capitol building to the north.

During his presentation promoting the idea, Watson noted the site would be privately run, with no taxpayer funds financing its operation. The venue is meant to preserve the state's musical heritage while showcasing Texas musicians.

The measure was approved 24-6, and next goes to the House toward the goal of full approval.
