Rise and shine, Austin! Let's get you started this Friday with everything you need to know going on today in Austin.

First, today's weather:

Some sun returning; warm. High: 99 Low: 72.

Here are the top stories today in Austin:

  1. Austin Community College (ACC) is offering a third bachelor's degree "to get more students in manufacturing jobs." Students can now register for "the Bachelors of Applied Technology in Manufacturing Engineering Technology" program "aimed at helping grads thrive in a booming manufacturing industry in Central Texas." Dr. Richard Rhodes, ACC Chancellor, said, "Too often, we hear that companies in our community are forced to hire outside the local talent pool because there aren't enough prepared and skilled workers here. We want to change that." For more details visit: (KVUE.com)
  2. An amazing animal rescue occurred on Wednesday, May 18, in Austin! That night, animal protection officers from the Austin Animal Center "received a call about a dog in a storm drain." Although normally animals can easily get out of storm drains, this case was different, as the dog was "'mired in mud at the bottom of a concrete box,' also called a splitter box, which is designed to direct overflow from a stormwater pond to a nearby creek." Fortunately
"the dog was microchipped, and staff were able to drive him home." For more on this story visit: (KVUE.com)
  3. The City of Austin is looking for "qualified individuals to serve on the three-member City of Austin Firefighters', Police Officers', and Emergency Medical Services Personnel's Civil Service Commission...to fill a partial term ending October 31, 2024." Those interested may complete an online application at https://austintexas.granicus.com/boards/forms/385/apply" and "submit a resume, cover letter, and any other supporting documentation" electronically to the Office of the City Clerk at bc@austintexas.gov. 4. After 10 years, Gloria's Latin Cuisine, located on Sixth Street in Downtown Austin, is closing down. The Salvadorian and Tex-Mex restaurant's last day will be on Monday, May 23, but their other location at The Domain, located at 3309 Esperanza Crossing, is still open. Although "property management did not offer a lease renewal for the restaurant" downtown, the owners said, "they have new plans for the space." Founder Gloria Rubio-Fuentes said, "We've had an amazing 10 years at our Sixth Street location...And while we're sad to leave Downtown Austin, we're excited to continue welcoming all of Austin to our beautiful location at The Domain." (KVUE.com)
  5. The search is on "for a suspect involved in an aggravated robbery at a Costco in North Austin" on Thursday, May 5. According to the Austin Police Department (APD), "the suspect assaulted an elderly victim and stole his wallet containing credit cards and an undisclosed amount of cash" at Costco on Research Boulevard. If you have any information, please call the APD Robbery tip line at 512-974-5092, Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477, or use the new Crime Stoppers App. You can also submit tips by downloading APD's mobile app, Austin PD, for free on iPhone and Android."
