Travis County Inmate Found Dead In Her Cell

Officials said Anya Wyne, 40, reopened an existing wound in causing her death after she was found unresponsive and bleeding on Saturday.

TRAVIS COUNTY, TX — A female inmate was found dead in her Travis County Jail cell on Saturday, officials confirmed.

The Travis County Sheriff's Office released details related to the death on Sunday. According to a press advisory, 40-year-old Anya Wyne of Austin was unresponsive and bleeding in her cell by an officer conducting a routine visual check of the area. Life-saving attempts were implemented by medical and correctional staff through CPR, officials said, but the efforts were futile.

At 9:16 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2019, Wyne was pronounced dead, officials said.

Wyne was booked into custody four days prior to her death, charged with Aggravated Assault Family Violence. Officials said she was booked in with a neck injury that was reportedly self-inflicted. She was housed on suicide watch before being moved to the medical housing unit on Dec. 18. When she was discovered unresponsive in her cell on Saturday, officials contend, the bleeding was due to a self-inflicted re-opening of the neck wound.

Still, an investigation by the Internal Affairs Unit, the Texas Rangers and the Medical Examiner’s Office has been launched, as is customary with any death of an inmate in custody.
