TxDot Launches $10 Million Traffic Cameras Upgrade

Network aimed at improving traffic flow, particularly along Interstate 35.

AUSTIN, TX -- The Texas Department of Transportation has launched a $10 million upgrade to its network of traffic cameras aimed at easing motorists’ commutes.

The agency is enhancing its Intelligent Transportation System, comprising cameras, message signs and roadways sensors designed to improve traffic flow, KXAN reports.

The upgrades will take place throughout Central Texas but with a focus on Interstate 35. Other key areas of focus include MoPac, SH 130, U.S. 183 and U.S. 290.

“Our system here in Austin is still in its childhood, compared to what’s in San Antonio or Houston,” TxDot spokesman Chris Bishop told the news station. “Even though it hasn’t been around long, we are in the process of getting it up to speed.”
