Here are the top stories today in Austin:
1) Important update: The voter registration deadline for Texas is Tuesday, Oct. 11. Your voter registration application must be received or postmarked by Tuesday in order to vote in next month's general election. Head to KUT to learn how to check your voter registration status and to get registered to vote.
2) APD needs help locating a North Austin stabbing suspect. Local police officials are looking for a man they say stabbed a woman last month after he followed her from a bus stop in North Austin.
The incident occurred at the 8500 block of North Lamar Boulevard, just north of the intersection with Hwy 183. Anyone with information is asked to call the APD Aggravated Assault Unit at (512) 974-8566 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS. Head to CBS Austin for more on this story.
3) A big update from our neighbors in Uvalde: The Uvalde school district has suspended its entire police department. KUT reports that this announcement came after some family members of victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School protested and even camped out at the district headquarters demanding accountability from law enforcement agencies who responded to the shooting. Head to KUT for the full scoop.
4) Local activists and community members continue to rally for reproductive and LGBTQ+ rights. Women's March ATX organized the rally, "Snatch ❜Em by the Vote," this past Saturday to advocate for reproductive justice, LGBTQ rights, and other progressive causes. The rally was in conjunction with others happening across the country. Activists continue to criticize Texas laws that they say infringe on the rights of women and members of the LGBTQ community. Head to the Austin American-Statesman to learn more about the protest.
