Austin Animal Shelter At 'Code Red' Due To Record-Setting Intake Levels
Officials are turning away more animals needing forever homes given overpopulation, officials said.
AUSTIN, TX -- The Austin Animal Center is operating under a "code red," meaning they are at full capacity after a record intake, according to media reports.
KXAN-TV reports the center is only able to take in hurt or sick animals, but have had to turn away others animals seeking forever homes. The overcapacity occurred after the shelter received a record number of animals last month, the station reported.
To remain a no-kill shelter, no more animals can be accepted, according to the report. Officials attribute much of the influx of animals to recent flooding when animals sometimes get spooked by lightning and run off. Typically, shelter officials take in about 20 animals a day -- a level now exceeded.

Only animals in need of medical attention are currently being accepted.
What this means is there is an urgent need for people willing to adopt an animal from the shelter. Another option for would-be adopters is to foster an animal for a while to see if it acclimates to its new surroundings first.
