Brutal Robbery on East 6th Left Man with Amnesia

The robbery occurred on Labor Day, and this Monday another man was severely injured in a similar incident.

EAST AUSTIN, TX - A violent robbery on E Sixth Street several months ago left a young man beaten so badly that he lost over a month of memory, and the victim still cannot remember his assailants.

On Labor Day of this year, 26 year old Raymond Dibiasi was robbed on E Sixth Street by two suspects and beaten about the head so brutally that he went into a coma and suffered significant memory loss.

“From my memories of the event, honestly I went to sleep one night and woke up a month later in San Antonio. I can’t remember anything from a week before the attack straight through to a month in the hospital afterwards,” he told KXAN.

His loss of memory has made it almost impossible for police to identify and catch the two men who almost beat Dibiasi to death. The suspects also made away with personal property such as a wallet and personal electronics.

“When I woke up I knew my name was Ray and who I was, but my memories of myself were not personal memories, I knew myself the way you know a character in a book. I wouldn’t wish it on anyone else, it’s a hell of a thing,” he said.

Doctors told Dibiasi that therapy could help him recover some memories of the attack. The victim is not sure if he wants to go through that, but will consider it in hopes of helping police catch his attackers.

“They tell me probably with a lot of work with a therapist of some kind they might be restored to some degree. But a lot of the memories probably can’t be because the brain wasn’t recording at the time,” he said.

On Monday, another man was assaulted and robbed on E sixth street by two suspects that are still at large, police said. The victim was injured so badly that the investigation had to be delayed. Police have not officially linked the two cases, but in both incidents to attackers left their victims seriously injured and made away with personal property.

APD Robbery is seeking the public’s assistance in locating and identifying the suspects in Monday’s case. If you have information, please contact the APD Robbery Tip Line at (512) 974-5092.
