Halfway House Escapee Found in East Austin

Convicted bank robber was at the public library when caught.

A wanted fugitive who walked away from a halfway house after serving time for a bank robbery has been captured in East Austin.

Lone Star Fugitive Task Force officials said Sergio Solis, 37, was located Friday afternoon in the 1100 block of East Cesar Chavez Blvd., according to media reports.

Solis had been transferred to the Austin Transition Center in Del Valle last month after serving out most of his 78-month sentence for robbing a Wachovia Bank branch in Austin. He was reportedly captured Friday afternoon at around 2:45 p.m. after leaving the facility earlier without permission that morning.

The Austin American-Statesman reported Solis was caught at the Terrazas branch of the Austin Public Library after a patron recognized him from a police notice. Solis was using a public computer terminal at the library branch at the time of his apprehension, the newspaper reported.

Solis was arrested without incident. An Austin Police Department spokeswoman said he was transferred to Bastrop County for booking.
