Health Resource Center Grand Opening In NE Austin Canceled

Predicted stormy weather prompts Central Health officials to cancel community tours, health fair but say they will reschedule soon.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — Central Health officials have canceled a planned grand opening of their Northeast Health Resource Center that would have featured a community health fair for fear of severe weather in the forecast.

The grand opening had been scheduled for Saturday, April 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A health fair at Volma Overton Elementary School, 7201 Colony Loop Dr, had been scheduled offering free health screenings.

"Due to the possibility of severe weather, the grand opening of the Northeast Health Resource Center has been canceled and will be rescheduled at a later date," officials said in a press advisory. "We will notify the media and the community about the new date for the grand opening celebration."

The National Weather Service is forecasting showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, with the chance of precipitation placed at 60 percent. Those chances diminish to 30 percent by Saturday night under mostly cloudy conditions.

Services at the Northeast Health Resource Center are scheduled to begin the week of April 30. Once fully operational, the Northeast Health Resource Center at Volma Overton Elementary School, will offer the following health and social services:

  • Eligibility and enrollment services for Central Health’s Medical Access Program (MAP), Medicaid, CHIP, and Healthy Texas Women’s Family Planning Program
  • Screening services for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol
  • Diabetes education
  • Basic needs application assistance
  • WIC services

The new resource center is the result of the Eastern Travis County Health & Wellness Collaboration—a coalition of community partners convened by Central Health to tackle the complex needs faced by residents of Eastern Travis County, which include Northeast Austin, officials said. Central Health will join CommUnityCare, City of Austin Public Health, Travis County Health and Human Services in providing health and social services at the Northeast Health Resource Center.
