North Austin Human Parts Update: Leg, Foot Found First, Rest Of Body Found Separately (Update)

Police initially dispatched Monday morning to Johnny Morris Road at Daffan Lane where decomposing human remains were found.

UPDATE: Police on Thursday provided an update on a case involving human body parts found along a bike trail in North Austin. Officials revealed that a leg and foot were found along the bike trail at Johnny Morris Road and Daffan Lane on July 31, but the rest of the body was found off Old Manor Road using a cadaver dog.

Homicide detectives now are working closely with the medical examiner's office to determine the cause of death and establish the identity of the deceased person, the gender of whom was not specified. Police said the process to determine identity and cause of death could take weeks to determine.

Police initially were called to the scene at around 7:46 a.m. on Monday after a bicyclist notified them of the human remains, which were found in an advanced state of decomposition. Read below for more details.

NORTH AUSTIN, TX — Police were alerted to the presence of human remains at a bike trail in the northeast part of the city on Tuesday, officials said.

At around 7:46 a.m. at the intersection of Johnny Morris Road and Daffan Lane, police were dispatched to the bike trails where bicyclists reported they had come across human remains. The remains were determined to be human, and in advanced stages of decomposition.

A cause of death is yet unknown, as is how the body came to be located at the bike trails, police said in an advisory. Homicide detectives are now working with the medical examiner to determine how the person died and establish positive identification of the individual found, police said.
