Kidnapping Of Child Averted In East Austin After Suspect Leads Police In Chase

Officers responded early Saturday after reports of a man taking a woman's child while wielding a screwdriver as makeshift weapon.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — Police prevented a reported kidnapping attempt from occurring early Saturday morning in East Austin, according to reports.

Police responded to a call at around 3 a.m. alleging that a man had taken a woman's baby hostage while wielding a screwdriver, KVUE reported. Officers with the Austin Police Department and members of the Texas Department of Public Safety reported to the incident near U.S. 183 and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, the news station reported.

As police arrived, the suspect entered his vehicle to lead them on a chase to North Austin, near Interstate 35 and Parmer Lane before heading south. DPS officers engaged the driver at this point, leading the suspect to a parking lot on Wall Street near I-35, according to the report.

Trapped, the suspect rammed a police vehicle as outlined by police. A trooper retaliated by pinning the man's car with the police vehicle. In the process, one officer sustained injuries, although their extent is unknown.

The suspect was promptly arrested, and the child was returned to the mother.
