Man Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver In East Austin (Update)

Jonathan Deleon, 29, was standing next to parked vehicle at 2000 block of East Cesar Chavez Street early Wednesday when he was hit by car.

EAST AUSTIN, TEXAS — A pedestrian who was standing next to a parked car in East Austin was killed after being struck by a driver who fled the scene early Wednesday, police said.

The incident occurred just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday along the 2000 block of East Cesar Chavez Street. There, Jonathan Deleon, 29, was standing near the rear driver's side of a parked vehicle when a white van or some type of SUV traveling westbound struck him before fleeing, police said in a press advisory.

Deleon was rushed to Dell Seton Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.

The incident marked Austin’s 55th fatal traffic crash of 2018, resulting in 56 fatalities this year, according to police. There were 50 fatal traffic crashes and 52 traffic fatalities at this time in 2017, police said.
