MLK Boulevard In East Austin Reduced To One Lane For The Next Six Months

The artery is closed as part of the 183 South Project and involves demolition of a nearby bridge.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — The reduction to one lane of East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in East Austin that started on Friday is expected to last for the next six months, transportation officials said.

The artery between Tannehill Lane and Regency Drive will be reduced to one lane in both directions during construction. The aim of the project is to accommodate a wider bridge at U.S. 183 as part of the 183 South Project.

The first part of the road project involves re-striping of MLK Boulevard to shift traffic in the westbound direction onto the eastbound lanes. Motorists will ultimately be diverted to the new bridge upon partial reconstruction while demolition of the original bridge is demolished piecemeal.
