Multicultural Children's Volumes Sought For Unique East Austin Book Drive

Tuesday is the final day of Melanated Book Drive staged by Counter Balance ATX for tomes featuring black or brown characters.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — There are still a few days left to participate to a unique book drive tailored for minority children featuring characters with which they can culturally relate.

The Malenated Book Drive runs until Dec. 20. Those wishing to donate can drop off multicultural books featuring brown or black characters and written in English and Spanish. The group Counter Balance ATX starting accepting books on Dec. 5, and will continue to receive them at various drop-off points throughout the city through Dec. 20.

Organizers ask for new or gently used books. Contact counterbalanceatx@gmail.com for more information or to host a drop-off site. Those unable to reach a drop-off location can visit the Amazon registry. Once collected, the books will be distributed to children living at the Elm Ridge Apartments at 1161 Harvey Lane.

Drop-off points for donated books are located at various locations throughout the city as well as in Pflugerville:

  • In.gredients, 2610 Manor Rd., hours Sunday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Victory Grill, 1104 E. 11th St., Mondays and Wednesdays 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Urban Co-Lab, 1818 E. 12 St., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Full Circle, 1810 E. 12th St., 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
  • University of Texas Gordon White Building, Warfield Center, 2nd floor, 210 W. 24th St., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Pflugerville, 2508 Grand Mission Way, 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
