Officer Shows Serious Dance Moves In East Austin (Video)

Austin cop was protecting the crowds at annual family church event, but accepted a dance captured on video watched more than 5,000 times.

EAST AUSTIN, TX — To protect and serve and cut a rug if necessary.

An Austin police officer displayed some rather arresting dance moves while protecting the crowds gathered at Cristo Rey Catholic Church, 2215 E 2nd St., on Sunday, his moves recorded for in a cell phone video that's been watched more than 5,000 times.

A lady attending the annual Jamaica event at the church approached the unidentified officer for a dance at the annual Cristo Rey Jamaica family event that took place from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. In the best tradition of public service, the officer complied to come to the woman's dancing aid.

The crowd loved it, cheering the officer on as he danced to some banda sounds, a type of regional Mexican music heavy on brass and percussion featuring myriad genres — from baladas (ballads) to rancheras. Officer Bino Cardenas, recorded as his partner cut a rug on the dance floor.

Patch reached out to the Austin Police Department to secure the dancing officer's name, but officials declined to identify him given the undercover nature of the work he often performs.
