From earlier:

EAST AUSTIN, TX — A police investigation has been launched after an officer fired into the car of a suspected drunk driver who attempted to flee after being pulled over early Monday morning.

The incident occurred at around 12:40 a.m. near Munson and Don Ann streets, according to the Austin American-Statesman, when two officers attempted to stop a man suspected of driving while intoxicated along Airport Boulevard.

The stop came amid a so-called 'No Refusal" weekend during the Super Bowl, when officers are able to secure bench warrants from judges for on-the-spot forceful blood draws for motorists refusing to be tested for alcohol levels.

A police spokesman said the officer making the stop tried to take the keys out of the ignition before the motorist fled and hit the officer, leaving him with serious injuries. The other officer pulled out his firearm and shot into the suspect's car as the motorist drove off, but didn't hit the driver.

A chase then ensued, and police were able to stop the car at Loyola Lane using spikes to disable the tires.

The injured officer has not been identified, but is described as a 19-year veteran of the police force. The suspect was taken into custody, but has yet to be formally charged.

A police spokesman said the officer who fired the shot would be placed on administrative leave during an internal investigation into his conduct. The step is standard protocol during officer-involved shootings.

This was the second officer-involved shooting in less than one month, the Statesman noted. On Jan. 14, officer Jesse Lane fatally shot Laurance Gilpin, 47, in Northwest Austin. In that prior incident Gilpin is said to have fired several rounds into the air with a rifle outside the Hope Presbyterian Church near Anderson Mill Road before police shot him.
