Suspect Formally Charged After Two-Hour Standoff In East Austin [UPDATE]

EAST AUSTIN, TX -- Austin police have formally charged a man with assault stemming from a Monday SWAT standoff in East Austin earlier this week.
According to an arrest affidavit cited by the Austin American-Statesman, Colonel Haywood, 73, has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police responded to the Chalmers Courts apartments on East Third and Chicon streets Monday morning after a report of a stabbing.
The suspect in the case barricaded himself in an apartment before police arrived on Monday morning,, finally surrendering to authorities after a two-hour standoff.

The victim told police she went to visit Haywood to comfort him because his mother had taken ill. In return, Haywood stabbed the visitor twice in the chest, according to the affidavit.
The victim ran off before calling 911. That's when Haywood decided to hole himself up in his apartment before police arrived.

It was later revealed that Haywood has prior arrests, including charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault with intent to murder.
He's now in custody under $15,000 bond for this week's stabbing-related charge.

EAST AUSTIN, TX -- Police responded to a scene of a stabbing Monday morning in East Austin where a suspect later barricaded himself inside a dwelling at East 3rd and Chicon streets.
By 11:30 a.m., the two-hour standoff ended without further incident. A suspect was taken into custody, while the victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Austin Police Department and SWAT team members responded to the 1800 block of East Third Street at about 9:30 a.m. after the victim called police to report he'd been stabbed. APD spokeswoman Angel Polansky provided those details in a subsequent press conference near the scene.
Polansky was unsure of the victim's condition. The name of both the victim and suspect have not yet been released as police continue their investigation.
As is customary in situations of a barricaded person, police rolled out its SWAT team in attempts to coax the suspect to surrender.
