Rooftop Mezcal Bar Opens Above Tex-Mex Staple Mi Madre's: ICYMI

The bar currently has 14 different varieties of mezcal, but the owners plan to let the selection grow.

Editor’s note: Need to spice up your nightlife? Are you a big fan on Mi Madre’s Tex-Mex? If either is true, check out Techo, a mezcal bar opened by the owners of Mi Madre’s on the rooftop of the Tex-Mex staple. Here’s the full story in case you missed it.

The owners of Manor Road Tex-Mex staple Mi Madre’s have opened their newest venture, a mezcal and tequila bar on the roof of their popular restaurant.

The new bar is called Techo, which is Spanish for “roof.” Edgar and Christina Torres, who own Mi Madre’s, said that Techo is a tribute to mezcal bars that are a big part of Mexican culture, reported Austin360. Along with mezcal, the bar will serve a selection of tequilas and a few beers for patrons to choose from.

“It was Edgar’s idea to do mezcal, but we wanted something everyone could enjoy,” Christina told Austin360.

But when it comes down to it, Techo’s focus is mezcal. The bar is currently stocked with 14 different bottles of the liquor made from the maguey plant, and the owners want to keep adding to the selection. The bar has room for about 40 patrons, half inside and half in an outside seating area.

Before the bar opened Tuesday night the owners, Edgar and Christina, tested the cocktails on customers at Mi Madre’s and School House Pub, which they also own.

Although it’s directly above Mi Madre’s, customers have to go through a staircase in the yard of School House Pub to get to Techo. The bar will be open 5 p.m. to midnight Tuesdays through Fridays and 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturdays.
