Police ID Victim, Suspect In East Austin Stabbing [UPDATED]

The incident marks the third homicide in a mere three days in Austin, and the 14th one so far this year.

East Austin, TX -- Police identified both the suspect and victim in a stabbing that left a man dead on July 1.

The incident occurred in the 900 block of Montopolis Drive. When officers arrived, they discovered Joseph Anthony Lapaso, 25, on the ground with multiple stab wounds. The suspect was later identified as Steven Johns, 18, who fled the scene before being arrested later.

Lapaso was taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge where he was pronounced dead at 11:48 p.m. His death was ruled a homicide.

Johns is now charged with murder, with a bond set at $500,000.

East Austin, TX -- A man stabbed near Montopolis Drive in southeast Austin Friday morning has died from his injuries, police said.

The victim was found suffering from stab wounds early Friday and was transported to University Medical Center Brackenridge, Austin-Travis County EMS officials said. The man later succumbed from his injuries there.

Police told the Austin American-Statesman they got a 911 call alerting them that two males were fighting near Felix Avenue and Montopolis. Police said the suspect ran inside a house after the stabbing.

After interviewing witnesses, police found the suspect and convinced him to turn himself in. Law enforcement officials have not yet identified the suspect or victim in the incident.
