EAST AUSTIN, TX — Police on Thursday said two teens who died after a car caught on fire following a collision this past weekend were racing at the time.

Anderson Palma-Rodriguez, 18, was racing another car along the 6500 block of East Riverside Drive near Montopolis just before 6 p.m. on Saturday when he lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a pole, police said in a press advisory.

The car burst into flames upon impact, killing Palma-Rodriguez and his passenger. While police did not identify the passenger, the Austin American-Statesman said friends and loved ones confirmed the other person in the car was Briana Moreno, 19.
