Thriving As Black Women And First Generation College Students

A discussion with professional women of color offers Black women and first generation college students insight on the pathway to success.

AUSTIN, TX -- Come out and enjoy a conversation with professional women of color as they offer perspective to help Black women who are first generation college students navigate this exciting experience. The event will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 6 from 7 PM - 8:30 PM at 1925 San Jacinto Boulevard, Austin, TX 78712.

Planned topics are careers/networking, mentors, and managing finances. However, please come with questions that you'd like to ask the panelists. The goal is to educate, empower, and build community through this dialogue. Please see below additional details and FAQs.

Patricia V. Hayes, J.D. is the Principal/Owner of PVH Consulting Group, LLC, a strategy consulting, public affairs, and leadership development firm in Austin, Texas, where she supports executive-level leaders. Patricia is a dedicated and experienced strategist who is brilliant at organizing people and projects to strategically accomplish their goals, creating solutions to complex problems, and communicating in writing complex issues and solutions. She most loves helping individual and organizational leaders to achieve their personal, business and programmatic goals.

Tami Jackson describes herself as the ultimate Big Homie/Aunite, and a very proud forever non-mom. She has over a decade of professional experience in a variety of industries including sports/entertainment, advertising, higher ed and tech; but she is quick to tell you she does not define herself by what she does professionally alone. She is a creative at heart with a passion for costuming, fabricating and style design - especially for plus sized and other non-traditional bodies.

Tia Olarinde, MPH, CHES, is a Program Specialist for the Texas Department of State Health Services, where she works in the Tobacco Prevention and Control Branch. Her title is Special Populations Coordinator, as she works to reduce tobacco-related disparities across the state of Texas.

Is this event only for UT-Austin students? Students from other campuses are encouraged and welcome to attend.

Will there be food? Yes, of course! A light dinner will be served.

Can high school students attend? While the conversation will be aimed at current college students, high school seniors would likely also benefit from the conversation and are welcome to attend.

Where is the School of Social Work located on campus? The School of Social Work is located at 1925 San Jacinto Blvd, near the corner with E Martin Luther King Jr Blvd. The building is yellow brick, and it is situated between the UT Recreation Sports Center and the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.

Is parking available? The closest parking garages are Trinity Garage (Trinity St. and E Martin Luther King Jr Blvd) and Manor Garage (2017 Robert Dedman Dr, next to the Mike Myers Stadium). There is metered parking on San Jacinto close to the corner with 20th St. There is a fee for visitor parking, so please consider carpooling.
