Tibor Schaechner, El Paso's last living Holocaust survivor, dies at 98 (elpasomatters.org) — El Paso is mourning Tibor Schaechner, the city's last living Holocaust survivor, who died Tuesday at 98 after decades of calling this community home. A longtime Popular department store buyer and supporter of the El Paso Holocaust Museum, he leaves a legacy of resilience and a message to future generations about defending their rights; his funeral is Thursday at B'Nai Zion Cemetery.
2. El Paso confirms 7th case of West Nile Virus as rain raises risk (elpasotimes.com) — Health officials in El Paso have confirmed a seventh case of neuroinvasive West Nile virus in a man from the 79927 area, who is hospitalized but recovering. With recent rains boosting mosquito activity, residents are urged to use repellents, eliminate standing water, and repair window and door screens to reduce infection risk.
3. Eastside-Central Coalition launches project documenting El Paso's Black community (ktsm.com) — A new Black Families Oral History Project is working to preserve the stories of Black families, leaders, and businesses that shaped historic El Paso neighborhoods like Alameda-Piedras, Lincoln Park, and Five Points. The Eastside-Central Coalition hopes collecting memories, photos, and documents now will protect an under-documented part of El Paso's history and support future community and economic development efforts.
4. Resler Drive Extension to link both sides of Loop 375 in Northwest El Paso (kfoxtv.com) — Construction has begun on the Resler Drive Extension in Northwest El Paso, finally linking both sides of Loop 375 and giving Enchanted Hills residents safer, faster access in and out of their neighborhood. Funded by the 2022 Community Progress Bond, the $13 million project should take about 13 months and is expected to improve commutes and emergency response times from nearby Fire Station 36.
5. $500,000 gift for Texas Tech Health El Paso from the GECU Foundation (kvia.com) — A new $500,000 gift from the GECU Foundation is helping speed construction of the Fox Cancer Center at Texas Tech Health El Paso, bringing comprehensive cancer care closer to home for local families. The center, built in partnership with UMC El Paso, aims to offer world-class treatment and academic medicine for Borderplex patients for generations to come.
