Of those calls, 18 were for fire-related incidents. That includes structure fires, vehicle fires, and brush fire. Another 339 calls were related to medical emergencies and patient care responses.

The department responded to 98 crashes and traffic incidents over the course of the month, including major and minor vehicle collisions. Another 21 calls were related to non-fire-related hazardous conditions like Hazmat or gas leaks.

During the month, the department responded to 74 alarm activations and 45 public service calls. The department conducted 23 fire and life safety hazard investigations during the month, and also completed 86 different building inspections and pre-fire planning sessions.

The city is currently working on a $7.7 million renovation and expansion of Fire Station No. 2, with major upgrades in the works. Those upgrades include a new apparatus bay, training stair tower, a renovated kitchen and day room, expanded parking, and key utility upgrades.

According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, 73,982 people in Kaufman County are affected by drought at this time. That's over 71% of the county, even though April was the 44th wettest on record over the past 132 years. January through April is the 31st driest year to date over the past 132.
