1. $1.3M grant helps Fort Worth, Tarrant and UNT Health process more forensic evidence (fortworthreport.org) — Fort Worth and Tarrant County agencies just secured a $1.3 million federal grant to boost DNA testing and keep local forensic backlogs from returning, especially for sexual assault kits. The money will support UNT Health’s Center for Human Identification, the Tarrant County crime lab, and Fort Worth police, helping maintain staff, upgrade equipment, and outsource complex DNA work to accredited labs.
2. Fort Worth police fatally shot two men hours apart. Here's what to know (star-telegram.com) — Two men were fatally shot by Fort Worth police in separate incidents about four hours apart early Saturday in east Fort Worth, prompting questions from family and neighbors. Relatives of rapper Emmitt Elijah Mayo and witnesses dispute police accounts, while another man, Jorge Contreras, was killed after a pursuit on Loop 820. Residents also describe ongoing problems with large block parties and gunfire in the area.
3. What's the future for Fort Worth's Farrington Field? It's still unclear (star-telegram.com) — Fort Worth ISD is restarting plans for long-needed renovations at historic Farrington Field, and leaders say demolition isn’t on the table. With repairs expected to cost tens of millions the district doesn’t yet have, officials are asking residents to share ideas while they weigh options for selling or leasing surrounding property.
4. Esperanza prevails as FWISD renames César Chávez Elementary with Spanish word for hope (fortworthreport.org) — Fort Worth ISD has officially renamed César Chávez Elementary in Diamond Hill to Esperanza Elementary after an extensive community input process involving families, students, and staff. The state-appointed board of managers suspended its naming policy to honor the campus choice, framing “Esperanza” — Spanish for hope — as a message for a district working to rebuild trust and improve student outcomes.
5. 97th Annual Fort Worth Memorial Day Service at Mount Olivet Cemetery to Honor Fallen Heroes (fortworthbusiness.com) — Fort Worth residents are invited to the 97th Annual Memorial Day Service at Mount Olivet Cemetery on Monday, May 25, 2026, at 10 a.m., a free event honoring fallen service members.
