Council members are pushing back on cuts they say would hurt neighborhoods, animal services and basic maintenance, while staff outlines hundreds of fee changes and vacant-position freezes to close a $94 million shortfall.
2. Cornyn: Fort Worth to Receive Nearly $600k to Support Law Enforcement, Enhance Public Safety (senate.gov) — Fort Worth is set to receive a share of nearly $578,000 in federal Justice Department grants aimed at upgrading law enforcement technology, equipment, and mental health crisis response. The funding, announced by Sen. John Cornyn, will be split among Fort Worth, Arlington, and Tarrant County to bolster public safety and incident readiness across the region.
3. ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard dies at 77. Here's a look at his Fort Worth ties (star-telegram.com) — ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard, a Texan who died Monday at 77, had deep musical ties to Fort Worth stretching back to early gigs at Panther Hall and the Tarrant County Convention Center. The band returned here for decades, from Billy Bob's Texas to Beard's final local show at Dickies Arena in 2023, cementing Cowtown's place in their story.
4. DFW-area high schools earn high marks in national rankings (audacy.com) — Dallas-Fort Worth high schools, including standout campuses in Fort Worth ISD, earned strong placements in U.S. News & World Report's latest rankings for Texas and the nation. Select magnet, charter and traditional schools across Tarrant and nearby counties posted top graduation rates and college-readiness scores, giving Fort Worth families more insight into competitive options around the region.
5. Prepare your taste buds for the 2026 State Fair of Texas Big Tex Choice Award winners (star-telegram.com) — North Texans, including plenty from Fort Worth, can start planning which award-winning fried creations to hunt down at this fall's State Fair of Texas, running Sept. 25–Oct. 8 in Dallas. This year's Big Tex Choice Awards crowned Burger Chop Tater Tacos, Fletcher's Chocolate Corny Dog, a Tropical Coco drink and a matcha-dipped cheesecake as the top new indulgences.
