1. Veteran Firefighter Named Interim Fire Chief in Fort Worth, TX (firehouse.com) — Fort Worth's City Council has tapped Assistant Fire Chief James Horton to serve as interim fire chief starting Sept. 1, following Raymond Hill's retirement. Horton, a 28-year department veteran with a Ph.D. in urban and public administration, previously helped integrate MedStar EMS and expand firefighter staffing while the city launches a nationwide search for a permanent chief.
2. Licata, FWISD leaders holding strategic action sessions to guide improvement (star-telegram.com) — Fort Worth ISD leaders are holding a series of strategic action listening sessions to address parent frustration over new instructional models, staffing shortages, and communication problems. Superintendent Peter Licata says feedback from these campus meetings will be shared with the state-appointed Board of Managers as the district works to rebuild trust and improve low academic performance. Residents are pressing leaders to match promises of transparency with concrete changes.
3. Texas Health to launch new maternal health program for continuity of care (fortworthreport.org) — A new Texas Health Resources maternal health program will soon offer free one-on-one support to pregnant women and new mothers in Tarrant and Dallas counties, helping them navigate food, housing, transportation, childcare and medical access. Community health workers will also screen for postpartum depression and violence, with a public kickoff baby shower in Arlington on Sept. 10. Eligible Fort Worth-area moms can now self-refer to join.
4. Missing Fort Worth man's body found at abandoned power plant (fox4news.com) — Fort Worth police have confirmed that a body found August 20 at the abandoned TXU power plant is that of Adam White, a local man reported missing June 1. Investigators say they do not suspect foul play, but the Tarrant County Medical Examiner has not yet determined a cause of death, and Fort Worth PD's investigation continues.
5. Juries hear of cruelty in simultaneous Fort Worth head bashing murder trials (star-telegram.com) — Two juries in Tarrant County have convicted men in separate but similarly brutal killings that happened months apart in Fort Worth's Near Southside and Historic Southside neighborhoods. Steven Black received life in prison for killing Susan Watkins, while Javaughn Greer was sentenced to 40 years for killing Donald Snellings. Both will be eligible for parole only after serving decades.
