In early February, a group of eleven HSHP Licensed Vocational Nurse students began their clinicals at Valley Baptist Health System. Through HCISD’s partnership with Valley Baptist, students are able to study and gain experience in a hospital setting.

Last year in March, clinicals for HSHP students came to a halt due to COVID-19. Now, they are ready to restart.

“It was an emotional moment for them to return to the hospital floors in the midst of a pandemic and put to practice the skills that they have refined in class and in the simulation lab,” Harlingen School of Health Professions Principal Tina Garza said.

In order to keep students safe while allowing them to continue hands-on learning, they were provided with personal protection equipment including N95 masks before beginning their clinicals.

“In this unprecedented time, these students are experiencing the most out of pursuing their nursing careers,” Garza said. “Throughout all the challenges they have faced, including transitioning to virtual learning, these students have excelled and continue to show perseverance while placing themselves at the front of the line.”
