📰 News we're reading

1. Data center developer requesting Harlingen drainage agreement (star-telegram.com) — Harlingen city commissioners are weighing a key drainage agreement that could determine whether a massive Fluidstack data center campus can move forward northeast of town, tying into a canal that also serves Valley International Airport. Officials are debating shifting approval power from staff to the commission, potential canal widening, and broader impacts on the city's stormwater system and future development near the airport.

2. STHS Children's, auxiliary to STHS and Spirit Halloween launch 2026 Spirit of Children campaign with special ribbon cutting (riograndeguardian.com) — Harlingen shoppers can support hospitalized kids this Halloween by visiting the Spirit Halloween store on South Expressway 83, where a portion of sales aids STHS Children's Child Life Program. Last year, Valley stores in Harlingen, Brownsville, and McAllen raised nearly $69,000, funding toys, sensory tools, and therapeutic activities that make hospital stays less frightening for young patients across the Rio Grande Valley.

3. Hurricane season peak around the corner as drought conditions continue across Valley (valleycentral.com) — Harlingen and the rest of the Rio Grande Valley are entering the peak of hurricane season with an unusually quiet Atlantic so far, thanks to strong El Niño conditions. Still, the entire Valley is under moderate to severe drought, with only limited sea-breeze showers expected in coming days to offer brief, spotty relief from the long dry stretch.

4. Wichita Falls listed among worst Texas cities for summer electricity burden (texomashomepage.com) — Harlingen households are facing some of the heaviest summer electricity burdens in Texas, with residents spending about 5.6% of monthly income on power bills. A new study comparing 50 cities shows how high energy costs and modest incomes combine to strain family budgets, highlighting where seasonal cooling bills hit wallets hardest across the state.
