Staycation: 10 Fun Things To Do In Houston This Summer
Pace yourself and enjoy some of the family fun adventures you can enjoy this week, or any weekend, in Houston
HOUSTON, TX — School’s out and if you’re children are already bored or you’re looking for something to do this weekend that's fun for the whole family, there’s plenty happening in the Houston area.
- The Children’s Museum of Houston|1500 Binz, Houston, TX| Phone: (713) 522-1138: The Children’s Museum is always a hit with parents and kids who are looking for a fun, interactive learning experience, and it’s open seven days a week. Call or click the link for tickets and details.
- Space Center Houston|1601 NASA Parkway, Houston, TX | 281-244-2100: The official visitors center for NASA and the Johnson Space Center. If you and your child love science or are interested in space exploration and the universe, it will be a memorable trip. Open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., most days. - Discover Nature In Houston Area Parks: If getting in touch with nature is a goal for you and your family this summer, the Houston area has opportunities galore: Those prime destinations include: Kickerillo-Mischer Preserve in Spring; Discovery Green Park and Hermann Park in downtown Houston; If you’re into paddling or kayaking the waterways, there’s Buffalo Bayou in downtown, Cypress Creek Greenway and Spring Creek Greenway which can be accessed anywhere between Humble and Spring. - The Houston Zoo| 6200 Hermann Park Drive, Houston, TX: Take the family on a wildlife adventure at the Houston Zoo. Lions, Tigers, Bears and more will keep you and the family entertained in this age-old experience. Hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Downtown Aquarium| Explore life in the ocean and have a little fun at The Downtown Aquarium. There are activities inside and out that include exhibits, a ferris wheel and other rides, games and restaurants. Ticket prices vary per activity.
- Waugh Bridge Bat Colony| Feeling a little batty? It may be time to experience one of Houston’s most interesting natural events. Hang out while 250,000 bats emerge at dusk from under the Waugh Drive Bridge, located over Buffalo Bayou between Allen Parkway and Memorial Drive. Buffalo Bayou Partnership offers Waugh Bridge Bat Colony Pontoon Boat Tours (second & fourth Friday of the month, March-October).
- Tomball Farmer’s Market| Tomball, TX: Get an early start on Saturday morning and check out rows of arts and crafts, handmade wax candles, jewelry, plants and a lot more. You can even mosey across Market Street to the massive rustic collection at Grannys Korner, or explore the gazebo, fountain and other sites at the Tomball Depot. Admission is Free.
- Combat Houston|6111 Richmond Ave, Houston, TX : Unleash your inner soldier at Houston’s premier paintball facility. Click the link for hours, and admission prices, and packages.

- Miller Outdoor Theatre| located inside Hermann Park, Miller Outdoor Theatre offers free outdoor performances. This weekend, take the kids to see Once On This Island: Friday, June 9 @11 a.m., and again at 8:15 p.m: Celebrate storytelling with this rousing Calypso-flavored tale of one small girl who finds love in a world of prejudice. This is a one-hour junior version of the musical. Seating for daytime performances is on a "first come, first served" basis.
- The Chocolate Bar| Located in Houston’s trendy Montrose area, this is a good reason to start your diet on Monday. Along with the shelves lined with assorted chocolate oddities, there's also a traditional candy counter filled with by-the-piece treats, like chocolate-dipped slices of fruit and bonbons. There's even a stunning trompe l'oeil "pizza" that's so realistic, you can almost smell the pepperoni--except it's made entirely of multicolored chocolate.
