33 Texas Companies Among the Best Employers In The US: Forbes

Forbes has released its rankings for the top large and mid-sized employers in the U.S., and Texas took a sizable share with 13 large companies listed in the top 100, and 19 out of 300 mid-sized companies.

Many of those top large companies were in Houston, and situated in the heart of the city’s medical district with Memorial Hermann Hospital System leading the way at No. 4, followed by MD Anderson Cancer Center coming in at No. 6 on the list.

Other Texas cities also fared well in the Forbes list, with San Antonio-based USAA Insurance coming in at a solid No. 5, and the City of Austin coming in at No. 9.

Other large Texas companies listed by Forbes included Dallas-based Southwest Airlines at No. 35, HEB Grocery at No. 41 and Neiman Marcus at No. 63.

Texas topped out the list with Texas Children’s Hospital coming in at No. 98 for large companies.

Other large companies that made the top 100 nationwide, include Costco, which was the top company in the U.S., followed closely by Google at No. 2.

As for mid-sized companies, Forbes listed San Antonio-based Rack Space Hosting at No. 2 followed by the University of North Texas at No. 25.

Conoco Phillips Chemical in The Woodlands came in at No. 35 and Noble Energy in Houston came in at No. 67.

Other Texas mid-sized companies on the list included Baylor University at No. 128, Texas State University at No. 139, Marathon Oil at No. 147, and Frost Bank at No. 204.

Shortly after Forbes released their rankings, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a press release announcing Chief Executive magazine had voted Texas the best state for business for the 13th consecutive year.

“For the 13th straight year, Texas proudly assumes the mantle of being recognized as the best state for business by America’s CEOs,” Abbott said in a prepared statement. “Companies in Texas, around the country, and across the world are relocating and expanding in the Lone Star State at a rapid clip due to our business-friendly policies.

The rating was based on Texas’ standing as the top exporter in the U.S.with $232 billion in goods exported in 2016, according to the Texas Economic Development Corp.

Texas rating was solidified by the fact that the state has the second largest airport system in the U.S. that includes the world’s first purely industrial airport, based in Fort Worth, 11 deep water that includes the Port of Houston, and more than 10,000 miles of industrial freight line used for export.
