Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Kolache Factory will celebrate its 40th year anniversary with 40 cent kolaches on Tuesday, Sept. 13. Every Tuesday leading up to this date, starting Aug. 23, there will be special deals available as well, according to a Kolache Factory spokesperson. If you want to take advantage of these deals, be sure to visit your local Kolache Factory on Tuesdays up until Sept. 13. On the 13th, you can purchase up to six fruit or cream cheese kolaches for the crazy good price of 40 cents a kolache. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  2. Reikina is a Japanese tasting menu dining experience that just opened its doors in Montrose. Chef Thomas Stacy has previous experience with the idea from his previous permanent location in CityCentre. However, the restaurant's new iteration as a menu that's only available for dinner three nights a week at Native Coffee is one among many important changes that the restaurant has undergone in search of greater success. Chef Stacy said, "I want to do it a bit differently this time — more rustic, with fewer courses, larger portions, and the option for guests to sit at their own table. I couldn't be more excited to bring these new changes to the Montrose community — the place where I grew up and where the pop-ups originally started. Reikina is centered around creative expression, and Montrose is a perfect place to match that creative energy." (CultureMap Houston)
  3. The Dallas Fort-Worth area flooded heavily yesterday nearly breaking its all-time record for inches of rain received in a single day, and Houston's up next. The same storm that poured over the DFW area is passing through Houston today, so please be vigilant of the weather and prepare for possible flooding. Storm concerns aside, the arrival of this weather system may very well end the extended drought Houston has seen this summer. Summer came early this year with all-time high heat in Houston for the months of June and July. With any luck and additional rain, it won't be too much to hope for summer to end early as well. 4. Social media local to the West University neighborhood exploded last week after two women were mugged there: one in her very own driveway. Writer Ken Hoffman offered his tips for staying safe in Houston. Surprisingly enough, they don't involve going to your local hunting store and preparing for war. Instead, Hoffman suggests that you only ever carry a single credit card and avoid traveling with a weapon in order to prevent a robbery from escalating into a murder. The simple advice is sometimes best, and Hoffman also pushes for tried-and-true methods like staying in busy areas and maintaining awareness of your surroundings (don't walk and text). 5. David Fields, Houston's chief transportation planner, believes that Houston is in the midst of a travel paradigm shift away from car-loaded highways and towards multimodal means. Fields, a New York native, said, "I think Houston has a reputation because it grew up around the car for many years, but the reality on the ground is not the historic reputation. I did not realize how much was going on here until I got to spend some time." That being said, multimodal development continues to see opposition from a Transportation Policy Council that holds suburban developments more important than urban improvements. One thing's for sure: all modes of transportation will be needed if Houston's population doubles in the next couple of decades as is projected. (Houston Public Media)
