Aldine Student Hit, Killed on Way to School

Initial investigation indicates the driver who hit the student was allegedly driving too fast in the school zone.

HOUSTON, TX -- A senior from Aldine MacArthur High School was killed when he was hit by a car Wednesday morning.

The victim was identified as Jose Torres, 18.

According to police, Torres was on his was to school at about 6:50 a.m., and was hit by a green pickup as he attempted to cross the street in the 4400 block of Aldine Mail Route

The driver of the pickup, a 33-year-old female, was reportedly trying to make a left turn to drop of her child at school when she allegedly crashed into the student, who was not in a crosswalk.

Police said the truck was likely traveling at 35 to 40 mph, nearly double the 20 mph school zone speed limit.

The victim was an "exceptional student" headed for college after graduation, according to Harris County Sheriff's Deputy Cedrick Collier.

Noami Ibarra, the victim's cousin, said he was an outgoing older brother with a passion for soccer and plans to graduate this year.

"He was found to be someone. He was going to make a difference," Ibarra said, adding that they would hang out most every weekend. She said Torres was like a brother to her.

Meanwehile, Aldine ISD released the following statement Wednesday:
"This morning one of our MacArthur High School students was struck by a car and killed on his way to school.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones.
"Counselors will be available to students and staff to assist them during this difficult time."

The cause of the wreck is under investigation.
