The Allstate Foundation grant to support nonprofit’s work helping individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence

HOUSTON, Oct. 26, 2017 – Allstate agency owners from the Houston-area will come together to host a supply drive and secure an Allstate Foundation Helping Hands® grant to benefit the Houston Area Women’s Center. The grant will support the nonprofit organizations’ mission to provide shelter, counseling and advocacy to individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence and supporting their efforts to move their lives forward.

The agency owners will each earn $1,000 for the Houston Area Women’s Center by collecting much-needed items during a supply drive Oct. 23 – Nov. 3. The supply drive coincides with National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The public can participate by donating toiletries, underwear (particularly sizes 8-12) and gift cards for clothing and household items. Supplies are especially needed in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, as the stress of storm damage clean-up and displacement can have a profound impact on victims of domestic violence and their families. Houston Area Women’s Center will use the grant to further its work in the community.

The participating Allstate volunteers are among thousands of agency owners and financial specialists around the country working to strengthen communities by volunteering their time to support the causes they care about most.

“As small business owners and community leaders, Allstate agency owners see firsthand the opportunities and challenges facing the communities they serve,” said Roberto DeLeon, Allstate senior manager of corporate relations in Texas. “Giving back is core to who we are, which is why we’re proud to volunteer and raise funds to help domestic violence survivors in Houston.”

The Houston Area Women’s Center is one of thousands of organizations this year to receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands grants secured by agency owners on behalf of the nonprofits where they volunteer. The grants support organizations addressing domestic violence, youth empowerment, disaster preparedness, hunger and other causes.

The Allstate Foundation Helping Hands grants are one example of The Allstate Foundation’s legacy of service and giving for communities and nonprofits across the U.S.:

  • Since The Allstate Foundation was founded in 1952, it has contributed over $400 million to support community nonprofits.
  • In 2016, The Allstate Foundation contributed more than $25 million to communities across the U.S.
  • Each October, domestic violence nonprofits across the country participate in the Purple Purse Challenge to raise funds for financial empowerment programs for domestic violence survivors. This year, more than 220 domestic violence nonprofits are competing for funds. Last year’s Challenge included nearly 200 nonprofits and raised nearly $4 million.
