Today's riddle: What did the wall say to the other wall. 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. 9 years after Harvey's landfall, some Houston homeowners still waiting on flooding compensation (kens5.com) — Houston homeowners downstream of Addicks and Barker reservoirs are still waiting for compensation nine years after Harvey, even after a judge ruled the Army Corps knowingly flooded downstream neighborhoods. The federal government has until Sept. 4 to decide whether to appeal, leaving many local families in limbo over long-promised relief.
2. Houston families say lack of school bus service is forcing parents to shuttle students each day (click2houston.com) — North Houston families at Yale Village Apartments say the lack of a Houston ISD bus stop is forcing parents and grandparents to make multiple daily car trips to Highland Heights Elementary and M.C. Williams Middle School. After HISD said no one from the complex had requested transportation, residents learned they must complete an online survey while they await answers on safety and eligibility.
3. Paralyzed cancer survivor from Houston launches home repair nonprofit (fox26houston.com) — A Houston cancer survivor has launched 4K Hands of Hope, a new nonprofit providing free emergency home repairs for elderly residents, veterans, and single parents across the Houston area. The group tackles urgent safety issues like broken steps, wheelchair ramps, and damaged floors, and is actively seeking volunteers, advisors, board members, and donors to expand its impact.
4. Houston Pastor Released From ICE Custody, Returns to Church Ahead of Asylum Hearing (christianitydaily.com) — A Houston-based pastor who leads several local Seventh-day Adventist congregations is back in the pulpit after being detained by ICE at Bush Intercontinental Airport earlier this month. Released on bond and now wearing an ankle monitor, he and his family, who settled in Houston in 2023, are preparing for a September asylum hearing that could determine whether they can remain in the city.
5. Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth rejects 70% salary increase to $305,000 (houstonchronicle.com) — Harris County Clerk Teneshia Hudspeth has turned down a massive raise that would have boosted her salary to $305,000, even as other Houston and Harris County officials accept similar increases. With the county facing a $129 million budget deficit and departments bracing for cuts, she says she wants existing resources focused on staffing and election-related needs instead.
