🌱 AR Argument + Rap Battle + Childhood Magic

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • Texas gun control laws hotly debated.
  • A rapper fist fight.
  • A local Mexican bakery.

First, today's weather:

Humid with a thunderstorm in spots. High: 91 Low: 76.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Governor Greg Abbott drew the ire of Uvalde families and others on Wednesday after claiming that raising the legal age for purchasing ARs is unconstitutional. Abbot cited multiple federal appeals across the country where enacting restrictions on ARs for individuals under the age of 21 was previously ruled as such. Supporters of Abbott wielding signs that read "parents matter" drew the attention of Brett Cross: father of 8-year-old Uvalde victim Uziyah Garcia. Cross responded in a tweet that went viral, saying, "don't sit there and act like you're for the people, that you're for the parents, that you're for the children, because you don't give a damn." 2. Houston rappers Z-Ro and Trae the Truth are in the spotlight after being caught in a scuffle on social media. While both rappers can clearly be seen in the video, Trae the Truth doesn't lay hands on Z-Ro. Instead, another man can be seen beating Z-Ro as he lies on the ground in the fetal position. Z-Ro has since told local media that Trae the Truth lured him to the location where the altercation occurred under the pretense of talking. Z-Ro said in an interview, "So, I went over there with the intentions of speaking, and speech is not where we're going. That's not what took place, speech." Trae the Truth posted on social media that Z-Ro's account of what went down was false and that he's trying to focus on helping people struggling with water supplies in Jackson, Mississippi.
  3. Houston could potentially benefit big from environmental provisions granted in Biden's Federal Inflation Reduction act. Some of the ways Texans might take advantage of these provisions include tax credit incentives, new appliances covered at anywhere from 50-100 percent of their cost for low-income families, and a $66.5 billion investment in clean power job generation. The bill also lays down groundwork for the further construction of electric charging stations throughout the state. Additionally, $3 billion was set aside for environmental justice concerning Texans disproportionately affected by power pollution. (Community Impact Newspaper)
  4. Montrose Mexican restaurant La Guadalupana Bakery & Cafe is a Houston gem according to food writer Marco Torres. In business for 27 years now, La Guadalupana offers baked Mexican goods, some of the best coffee in town, mole paste imported from Puebla, Mexico, and other Mexican food favorites including enchiladas, tacos, and tamales. The business even drew the eye of popular food guru Anthony Bourdain who visited the restaurant for a segment of his show "Parts Unknown" back in 2016. While La Guadalupana didn't end up making the final cut of Bourdain's show, that's no reason to miss out on all the deliciousness this Houston mainstay has to offer. (Chron)
  5. The Houston Ballet will be performing 'Peter Pan' from Sep. 9-18. Director Trey McIntyre went into detail about what you can expect from a showing, "It was important to me that the show appeal to not only children but also to the adults who are there with them. I think it's a show with themes that are so universal, from the perspective of both children and adults—what it means to grow up and move away from how you experience life as a child. It's so full of creativity. The show delights the parts of ourselves that are connected to the imagination." McIntyre's show offers a chance for adults to reconnect with their past and remember what it's like to be a kid. (outsmartmagazine.com)
