Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. The Sexual Assault Resource Center clinic currently has a waitlist of rape victim abortions scheduled. Just this summer, all abortions besides those made to save the life of the mother were banned in Texas. At the time, Governor Greg Abbott said, "Texas will work tirelessly to make sure that we eliminate all rapists from the streets." However, the sexual assault hotline will soon eclipse the number of calls it received last year. The depth of the crises these women face and the fact that the overwhelming majority of voters support abortion rights in extreme cases seems to have no effect on swaying the lawmakers of the Lone Star State. 2. A sixteen-year-old from Bellaire supposedly shot and killed his parents in their sleep back in 2016 and now the young man will see a second trial for his crimes. Accused Antonio Armstrong Jr.'s first brush with the judicial system ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision. The retrial has seen a number of postponements but will officially begin on Monday, October 3. Armstrong Jr. maintains that an intruder entered the house at night and murdered his parents. (KHOU.com)
  3. Pearland Art on the Pavilion is a two-day event that will celebrate and feature regional artists of all kinds. Pearland Town Center will host booths for jewelers, artists, food trucks, and more. Aside from shopping though, visitors can also enjoy a chalk-art competition and live rock, blues, and soul music from the main stage. The festival takes place Saturday, October 8 and Sunday, October 9th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (365 Things to Do in Houston)
  4. Teacher retention continues to fall across Texas as educators are exploited emotionally and financially. The newest surveys show disappointing results including that 77 percent of teachers have considered leaving the profession and that the number of teachers who feel valued by Texans overall has fallen from 44 percent to 17 percent. And why should they? After all, the University of Houston's 2021 Texas Teacher Workforce report showed the salary of teachers had actually fallen 1% from 2011 to 2019 when adjusted for inflation. Ultimately, those who stand to lose the most as veteran teachers abandon their underappreciated posts are the children of our Texas communities. (Community Impact Newspaper)
  5. The Camp Logan soldiers of Houston were involved in the largest murder trial in US history, and the families of those soldiers continue to seek justice for their legacy to this day. The Camp Logan soldiers were black soldiers who served back in 1917 and were involved in a violent outburst that led to the deaths of 17 and the injury of over 20 others. Advocates for the soldiers say that the violence was let on by years of segregation and poor treatment. Consequently, they are seeking clemency for their deceased family members so that their legacies may be cleaned of any infamy. KPRC2 will go more in-depth on the issue this week during their Houston Newsmakers segment. (KPRC Click2Houston)
