Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. Houston's second gun buyback event was a smashing success and marks the largest one-day gun buyback event in U.S. history. A total of 1,208 firearms were collected from over 300 cars over the course of this past Saturday. The city provided compensation for the weapons in the form of gift cards. Anonymity was a key feature of the event as citizens handing over weapons didn't even need to provide identification. The buyback did have a 25 gun turn-in limit per attendee, which one person actually managed to surpass. By the end of the day, there still remained a line of cars waiting to turn in their weapons. Those who didn't make it to the front of the line in time did at least receive vouchers that will put them at the front come the next buyback event. (Houston Chronicle)
  2. A security guard at a north side Houston night club proved himself a talented marksman Saturday night, shooting the victim of a robbery twice in his attempt to provide aid. Jokes aside, the security guard did manage to subdue one of the two suspects involved in the robbery until police arrived. The robbery and accidental shooting victim is expected to survive their injuries. HPD will continue to investigate the incident. Personally, I think I would rather get robbed than be shot twice. The hospital bills are probably more expensive than anything that could have been stolen. (KHOU.com)
  3. Between a Stranger Things themed upside-down market, the annual Puerto Rican and Cuban festival, and a Carnival Spooktacular at Market Square Park, there's no shortage of events to attend this coming week. The Halloween carnival takes place this Friday from 5pm-10pm and will include pop-up stalls with ghostly wares, a costume contest, and all kinds of performances. The Puerto Rican and Cuban festival takes place in Sugarland on Saturday and promises a car show, great eats, and culturally appropriate concerts. Lastly, the upside-down market is firing off on Sunday at Iron Works in East End and offers yet another costume contest, curated foods, and a screening of one of the most popular episodes of the series. 4. A former Conroe ISD teacher was sentenced to spend a decade behind bars for engaging in an inappropriate relationship with a student. Bonnie Mazock, 37, had intimate communications with one of her students using Snapchat. The family of the student is currently suing the social media giant for providing a space for the conversation. (FOX 26)
  5. HPD are attempting to get to the bottom of a suspected murder-attempted suicide after uncovering two bodies in a car on the shoulder of I-45. Investigation into the incident had all southbound lanes shut down for hours on Saturday. The passengers were a man and woman who had both taken gunshot wounds to the head. While the woman was pronounced dead on the scene, the man was flown to a hospital in critical condition. The relationship between the two victims currently remains unknown. (KTRK-TV)
