🌱 Astroworld Fallout + World Cup Venues

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Let's dive into:

  • New regulations for mass events following Astroworld.
  • The busiest roadways in Harris County.
  • Where to watch the US World Cup game this Saturday.

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny; breezy, cooler. High: 65 Low: 41.

Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. A deal between Harris County and the City of Houston will allow HPD or the Houston Fire Department to reject mass event plans in lieu of the ASTROWORLD tragedy last year. In November 2021, ten people lost their lives at the ASTROWORLD concert after a crowd rush led to them being trampled to death. Mass events are categorized by gatherings of 6,000 people or more. In addition, a new city ordinance will be put into place today that requires music events on private property with at least 500 people in attendance to be granted permission from the city. Most notably, event organizers will need to include a "Event Security Plan and Event Medical Plan" in case of emergency. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  2. The Texas A&M Transportation Institute released data showing that five of the ten most congested roadways in Texas are located right here in Houston. The section of the West Loop Freeway between I-10 and I-69, passing the Galleria, took first place on the list. Different parts of I-69 took fourth and fifth place, which is no surprise considering the ample construction the freeway has seen this year. Coming in at eight place was a section of the North Loop West Freeway between I-45 to I-10. Finally, a section of I-45 from I-10 to South Loop East Freeway snagged tenth place on the list. 3. In case you're wondering where to watch the US World Cup game this Saturday at 9 in the morning, we've got a list of bars that will be open and pouring. Fast casual Mexican restaurant and bar La Calle Tacos will offer tacos and margaritas at any of their three locations. If you're big on patios, the Bagby location specifically has a nice one. All three Kirby Ice House locations, including the new one in the Woodlands, will open up at 9 a.m. this Saturday in special honor of the game. In the Montrose area there's British pubs the Phoenix on Westheimer as well as Red Lion British Pub on Shepherd, both of which will be open early while the World Cup is going on. You're not going to want to miss one of the biggest games of the decade, especially with all of these bars opening early. (Chron)
  4. A Houston woman accused of transporting and selling stolen dogs in a U-Haul will appear before a district judge on Dec. 8. Tiara Alsaid, 26, owns a business that purports to transport animals cross country. However, police who pulled Alsaid over found that her U-Haul contained four malnourished and injured animals locked in kennels filled with their own pee and feces. The animals had no access to food or water and one of them suffered from a rash that looked like a chemical burn. Furthermore, police believe Asaid is seilling the dogs as opposed to transporting them as she claimed. The dogs in question are valued at thousands of dollars. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Dragon's Lair Comics & Fantasy off of Highway 249 has added a restaurant called Tabletop Tavern to their store. Dragon's Lair owner Christine Pohl said, "We will be serving what we call 'gamer fare.' Our menu features a variety of items, but our bestseller is the Tavern Burger. We have an espresso machine and some specialty coffees that have special syrups already added, but you can also create your own custom drink." On top of enjoying the gamer fare, customers can also enjoy tabletop games purchased or brought with them while seated at the tavern. Draft beer, pizzas, burgers, loaded tater tots, coffee, and more can all be found on the tavern's menu. (Community Impact Newspaper)
