🌱 Breast-Town + Wastewater Excellence + Chic High-rise

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening.

Now, today's weather:

An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 90 Low: 76.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. You may already know of Houston's impressive history in energy and agriculture, but what you probably haven't heard about is H-town's crucial role in the development of breast augmentation. Dr. Franklin Rose along with former professors Dr. Gerow and Dr. Cronin are credited with coming up with the idea for the first silicone gel breast implants back in the 1960s. Rose said, "Once the first silicone gel implants were placed, it was thought to be quite safe, and Houston was the birthplace of the breast implant. And even today more breast implants are being done per capita in Houston than anywhere in the world." By and large, breast augmentation procedures are most popular in sun belt cities across the southern US. (Houston Public Media)
  2. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) recognized the Houston Health Department as a National Wastewater Surveillance System Center of Excellence. Besides Houston, the only other jurisdiction to have earned this distinction so far is Colorado. The Houston Health Department along with help from Rice University and others began scrutinizing wastewater heavily in May of 2020 after the breakout of the COVID pandemic. The end goal was to be able to more easily recognize developing outbreaks so that we can take measures against these diseases before it's too late. Mayor Sylvester Turner said, "This initiative allowed HHD to identify and contain the virus from spreading in our community. I want to commend HHD and all the partners for their hard work and dedication to protecting Houstonians." (Houston Style Magazine)
  3. The head of an illegal credit card skimming operation based in Houston was sentenced to an 84-month prison term. Cuban citizen Durlan Garica-Pupo led a group of thieves to install credit card skimmers around Houston gas stations which would steal credit card information. When authorities searched Pupo's home, they found a laptop with over 1,500 stolen credit card numbers. Pupo and his coconspirators claimed that they would sell the stolen credit card numbers to other thieves or purchase fuel with them and resell it at lower prices to make quick cash. Get by or go to prison sure doesn't have the same ring to it as get rich or die trying. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  4. On the corner of downtown Market Square Park, the newly completed Brava residential high-rise brings a chic modern aesthetic to one of the oldest parts of Houston. Taking into account Houston's shipping past, the bottom of the building was constructed to mirror the hull of a ship. Residents of the 46-story tower have access to a beautiful view of Buffalo Bayou, their next door neighbor Texas Tower, and the stunning rooftop gardens atop other nearby buildings. Modern art hangs throughout the graceful building and amenities include a fitness center, 10th floor swimming pool, and rentable Sky Lounge for hosting parties. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Houston ISD is considering upping the school security ante by introducing electronic doors, visitor check-ins, and even teller windows. Other suggestions include 8-foot tall fences around school communities, parking garages with access-controls systems, closed-circuit security cameras, and redesigned, compartmentalized school campuses. Renovating doors to only be openable with an access key was yet another suggestion. Kids already think going to school is like going to prison, and now we're proving them right.
