🌱 Christmas Angels + Greenie Roots

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Read on to find out more about:

  • Giving the gift of Christmas this holiday season.
  • Human trafficking in Houston airports.
  • The history of environmentalism in America.

But first, today's weather:

Breezy with a few showers. High: 85 Low: 61.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. The annual Salvation Army Angel Tree Program has returned to provide Christmas gifts to disadvantaged kids in the Houston area, especially amid historic inflation. The program relies on the generosity of Houstonians who are interested in adopting angels of their own. From now until Friday, Dec. 4, you can visit virtualangel.org and select the gender and age group of the angel that you would like to adopt before choosing your specific angel on the following screen. Donors spend $75 on average, however, anyone interested in donating is welcome to provide whatever amount they are comfortable with. The program is expected to serve over 12,000 children and seniors this holiday season. Let's see if we can't bump those numbers up a smidge. (Houston Chronicle)
  2. A news conference taking place at Houston airports today seeks to educate over 400 employees on the intricacies of human trafficking. A panel will meet to discuss how to spot human trafficking and what to do should you suspect a person's life is in danger. The conference is occurring ahead of the holiday season when law enforcement suspect traffickers will attempt to take advantage of large crowds. A recent FBI information release shows that the majority of human trafficking occurs through airports. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  3. Rice professor Douglas Brinkley will host a forum on November 10 to discuss the book that coined the term environmentalism in America. Silent Spring by Rachel Carson is responsible for galvanizing a movement being called "The Great Environmental Awakening" back in the 60s and 70s. During this time, our nation passed historic environmental legislation including the Clean Air Act, the Endangered Species Act, the celebration of Earth Day, and the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency. Brinkley recently published his own book called Silent Spring Revolution that chronicles the momentous era. For more information on the event, check this link. (Houston Public Media)
  4. "Black Panther" sequel "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" features two Houston artists on its soundtrack released today. Houstonian artists Tobe and Fat Nwige join Afrobeat stars including Tems, Fireboy DML, Burna Boy, CK, and more with their track "They Want It, But No". The song is a heavy beat, high tempo celebration of the importance of standing up to adversity. The soundtrack you can find their music on is titled "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever -- Music From and Inspired By,". Wakanda Forever releases in theaters everywhere on November 11. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Over 50 emaciated dogs covered in their own feces and urine were rescued from a Houston home by the SPCA yesterday. One of the dogs rescued was a one day old puppy. The animals were located in a house in the Greater Heights Area of Houston. A neighbor tipped off the SPCA after never seeing the dogs outside and rarely witnessing their owner returning home with food. The SPCA are claiming that the rescue is an extreme case of neglect and that criminal charges may yet be filed. If you witness or suspect animal cruelty, you can reach out to the SPCA at (713) 869-7722 or file a report at www.houstonspca.org. (KPRC Click2Houston)
