Here are the top stories in Houston today:

  1. Houston Wine Cellar may be Houston's oldest wine storage facility, but it's now under new ownership. Vino Vault purchased the location from long-time owners Gigi and Brad White. This adds Houston to Vino Vault's collection of premium wine cellars across the country, including hotspot cities like Los Angeles, New York, Denver, and Dallas. Gigi White said, "While we will certainly miss the community we built, we know our clients are in good hands with Vino Vault who is committed to continuing our excellence." (CultureMap Houston)
  2. Master Sculptor Bridgette Mongeon is turning clay into masterpieces across Houston. Mongeon said that she leaves a piece of herself with each sculpture and that all of them are informed by the events going on in her life at the time of sculpting. Completed sculptures include a giant tiger, characters from "Alice in Wonderland," Eve from Adam & Eve, and the famous educator Booker T. Washington. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  3. HPD Sergeant Kendrick Simpo is thanked for preventing a mass shooting at the Galleria. Simpo was working his second job at the mall when a man armed with a rifle and a handgun was reported at a children's event nearby. Simpo said, "My initial thought was to try and hurry up and get there as quick as possible." The HPD sergeant managed to tackle the armed man and confiscate his rifle before any harm was done. For Simpo, it seems there's no such thing as going off duty. (KPRC Click2Houston)
  4. Houston HOAs are struggling to combat 'chronic party houses.' Short-term rental homes in Houston found on Vrbo and Airbnb are being used as party locations. One home on Vrbo is listed as "Jungle Estate" and asks renters whether they will need help arranging a DJ and dance floor, among other party-related items. Presently, HOAs are helpless to fight off the nightly shenanigans due to outdated legalese. (Houston Chronicle )
  5. YMCA of Greater Houston hopes to provide school supplies to 20,000 Houston-area students. Operation Backpack has freely given school supplies to students in communities around Houston for nearly two decades. Make a donation today to support the education of our youth. Text YMCABACKPACK to 24365, donate at your local HEB in-store, or donate online by following the link. (YMCAHouston)
