🌱 Club Dining + Police Misconduct + House of Spirits

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • A new Houston restaurant experience.
  • The HPD case of Officer Gerald Goines.
  • Halloween comes early.

First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 89 Low: 72.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Houston is opening a new temporary shelter for migrants in transit to their final destination with host families. The shelter is intended to be used as a one night stop for migrants as they make their way to other U.S. cities. The shelter plans to offer free transportation to bus stations as well as the airport. 1.8 million people have come to the U.S.-Mexico border so far this year, and nearly half of them have been turned away. This record number of migrants comes as conditions in Mexico continue to deteriorate due to gang violence and political floundering. (Houston Chronicle)
  2. Se7en is a bold new restaurant arriving at the Kirby Collection mixed-use development later this year which seeks to marry fine dining and a club atmosphere. The club takes inspiration from successful Miami businesses like Sexy Fish that have already managed to capitalize on the same idea. The menu will be Asian-inspired, French-Mediterranean and menu items will feature titles that play on seven-related themes such as the Seven Deadly Sins and the Seven Wonders of the World. Seven Hospitality Group partner Frank Edosomwan said, "Our goal is that when folks come to Houston, they want to come to Se7en. Celebrities, VIPs, this is where they want to be. We want to operate at a high level." (CultureMap Houston)
  3. Yet another victim of disgraced and former Houston police officer Gerald Goines was released yesterday. Over his police career, Goines provided false testimony, faked evidence, and tampered with police documents in order to imprison hundreds of individuals. Officer Goines was only found out after a drug raid led to the death of two people. An internal probe launched after the event revealed that HPD narcotics had been cutting corners on their police work for over a decade. District attorney Kim Ogg recently announced that convictions involving Goines going back to 2012 need to be reviewed. Nonetheless, Goines and cohorts still await trial over 3 years after their actions came to light. (Houston Chronicle)
  4. House of Spirits is hosting a Halloween themed cocktail soirée in the haunted home of Casa Vega in October. The event will feature lavish drinks, extravagant costumes, secret games, tarot card readings, and information about the haunted history of Casa Vega. Guests are free to roam the house over the course of the party and can expect to be entertained by performers once they've had their fill of exploration. The House of Spirits will host these parties from October 8 - 31 Thursdays through Sundays at varying hours. (FOX 26 Houston)
  5. Dallas-based taco chain Velvet taco is coming to Memorial City as they open their seventh Houston location right next to Goode Company off of I-10. The chain is known for its inventive tacos, delicious red velvet cake, and margaritas you will want to write home about. Specifically, their chicken tikka misala taco, falafel tehina crema taco, and shrimp and grits with Cajun remoulade taco are all taste bud busters that you won't find anywhere else. Speaking of other taco shops, Austin-based chain and rival Torchy's Tacos has a location just about a mile away. Decisions, decisions. (CultureMap Houston)
