Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Houston's first and wildly successful gun buyback event this past weekend collected 845 guns from the Houston community as well as the disapproval of the Harris County DA. In lieu of the grand success of the event, the DA's office said they take issue with the present "no questions asked" policy. After all, some of the guns being turned in could be important clues to solving past crimes. David Mitcham, the DA's top assistant, said "We certainly recognize the importance of getting guns off our streets... in an effort to reduce violent crime. We applaud that sentiment. But it frankly is mystifying as to why you wouldn't identify who it is that was turning in the gun." (Houston Public Media)
  2. Houston's annual White Linen Night returns to the Heights this weekend. The event will take place this Saturday, Aug. 6 as Houstonians dress up in their most comfortable white attire and drink all day and night around the Heights area. Bars throughout the Heights are cashing in on the event by hosting parties and gatherings all throughout the day. You can start your drinking weekend off at Moonshine deck at 11 a.m. and ride the buzz all the way to Onion Creek Cafe's parking lot party starting at 6 p.m. (CultureMap Houston)
  3. Fried chicken is undoubtedly a beloved Houston meal, so it's useful to know all of the best spots where you can enjoy this flaky, succulent treat. The Heights area's best fried chicken cuisine can be found at Barbecue Inn, Dak & Bop, Harold's Restaurant, and La Lucha. The Mahatma Gandhi district offers a unique foreign twist on the dish at Himalaya. However, if you're looking for the classiest fried chicken you can find, Frank's Americana Revival as well as Relish in the Montrose / River Oaks area both offer fried chicken dishes dressed to the nines. 4. New U.S. census data provides insight into where Houston's growing young adult population is coming from. Perhaps most notably, Houston was found to be the second-most popular destination for young Black adults to move. Atlanta was the first. Among the young adults moving to Houston, an estimated 11 percent come from another city in Texas while 16 percent were found to be from big, urban, out of state environments like Chicago, Los Angeles, and New Orleans. Come on down, ya'll. Unlike Austin, we've got the room to spare. (Houston Chronicle)
  5. Houston Independent-Area School District is struggling to fill 880 open positions before the fast-approaching start of the new school year. Unfortunately, HISD isn't the only Texas school district with an unprecedented number of vacancies. Cy-Fair ISD has 472 open positions, Fort Bend has 275, Aldine has 409, and Katy is still sitting at 200. Data suggests that fewer and fewer people are attending college in order to become educators, and this trend is beginning to show its effects. Deer Park ISD superintendent Stephen Harrell said, "We're paying as much as we've ever paid". (KHOU.com)
