Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- Houston superhero "Dash Gordon" has made League City a better place by bringing smiles to the faces of DoorDash customers; however, now he's contributing more than smiles through the creation of a nonprofit foundation. Glover is a father of eight who began delivering for DoorDash as a side hustle last year after his wife encountered health problems. Frustrated that customers wouldn't open their doors to receive him, he came up with the persona "Dash Gordon" named after the popular DC superhero the Flash. Eventually, Dash stopped delivering for the food service and began knocking on doors to help residents of League City who were facing financial hardships. After local media picked up the story, Dash became a local hero and ended up hosting a local fundraising event that saw major success this past winter. Now, his planned nonprofit the Dash Gordon Foundation seeks to provide aid to societal issues revolving around children such as foster care and special needs assistance. (Houston Chronicle)
- In case you haven't noticed, eggs have doubled in price across Houston over the past year. Where as a carton of eggs would cost you somewhere around $2 previously, now local grocery stores are charging anywhere from $4 to $5 for this breakfast essential. In comparison, the national average for a dozen eggs is $2.58. The price of eggs has skyrocketed due to an outbreak of bird flu last year that killed a total of 60 million birds: 43 million of which were egg-laying hens. Eggxperts say that the increased prices may take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to finally moderate themselves. (KPRC Click2Houston)
- Enjoy artistic performances at a number of venues across Houston this week including Saint Arnold's Brewery, the Wortham Center, and MATCH. This Wednesday, Saint Arnold's Brewery will host their annual Beer and Brass event where musicians will present a brass ensemble as you enjoy a wide selection of brews at the location's wonderful beer garden. The Houston Grand Opera is putting on comedic performance The Marriage of Figaro at the Wortham Center which details a Spanish servant's marriage to a French countess' maid. Lastly, MATCH is presenting a dancing heavy performance featuring diverse cultures and music called All of the Above this Thursday and Friday. (365 Things to Do in Houston)
- Instead of going artsy, there's also a number of happenings around town this week for foodies interested in eating out. Galveston restaurant week officially begins today and will run through the first week of February with restaurants like Willie G's, Hearsay on the Strand, and more offering menus that raise funds for local charities. Carrabba's is putting on a toast to the new year wine dinner this Tuesday featuring a four-course meal with eggplant salad, champagne shrimp and scallop linguine, wood-grilled sirloin, and chocolate cannoli. Lastly, Chevron marathon runners can enjoy a 15% discount on one bowl of ramen at Ramen-Tatsuya by presenting their race bib at the restaurant this weekend. (Houston Press)
- A Houston doctor heading into surgery Monday morning is surprised he's still alive after a chase suspect slammed into his car, nearly bisecting his vehicle. The crash happened at Sage and West Alabama at around 5:30 in the morning. The chase suspect had just crossed a spike strip when his car careened forward into the Houston doctors. Innocent bystander Dr. James Boynton said, "Out of the blue, I get hit in the middle of the intersection. It should have cut my car in half. I get out of my car. I don't know how I'm alive. One more foot back and it would've cut my car in half." The driver of the chase vehicle then slammed into a pole that cut his truck in half before it went up in flames. By some sort of miracle, the suspect driving the chase vehicle was taken to the hospital conscious and breathing. Police plan to charge him with two felonies. (KTRK-TV)
