I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top stories in Houston today:
- The Houston Area Woman's Center, HAWC, announced its plans to expand on Tuesday in order to better address domestic violence across the city. Expansion plans include the introduction of a 135-unit Emergency Supportive Housing space that will triple the center's current capacity while providing shelter, childcare, and access to HISD elementary schools. Additionally, four new Survivor Empowerment Hubs are being established across the city which will provide counseling, case management, and other legal services. Executive Director Emilee Whitehurst championed the expansion, saying, "October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This is the month, wherever you remember that each and every day. Each and every one of us has a role to play in addressing public health in the epidemic of interpersonal violence."(Houston Public Media)
- An "Alice in Wonderland" themed pop-up cocktail party is coming to Houston on January 11, 2023 featuring all the accoutrements you would expect from an event hosted by the Mad Hatter. The fantastical tea party will see familiar attendees in costume, including the Mad Hatter himself. Additionally, guests can expect to enjoy games, riddles, cocktails, an "Eat Me" cookie, and more. According to the advertisement, visitors will be rewarded with cocktail ingredients for their tea pot in exchange for solving challenges presented. The pop-up will run for 12 weeks and comes at a cost of $47 per person. (Houston Chronicle)
- The numbers are in for this Halloween season, and Starburst has been polled as Texas' favorite candy. Delaware and Michigan were the only other states to share Texas' love for the tart taffy patties. Meanwhile, 18 states favored Reeses as their favorite candy and another nine elected Kit-Kat as their king in crunch. M&M's, Snickers, and Milky Way made up the majority of the remaining state's top selections. However, Montana and Vermont surprisingly chose Hot Tamales as their dearest. I guess you need something hot when it gets so dang cold outside. (Houston Chronicle)
- Two men are wanted after being accused of trying to steal a snake in what HPD believe was an armed-robbery setup. A woman had placed an ad online to sell her snake and met up with a potential buyer in southeast Houston. As they chatted over the exchange, two men approached them. One of the men pulled out a hand gun and demanded that the woman hand over the snake. Instead of handing it over, she tossed the reptile into the back of her truck. In response, the two men took off on foot. The seller now believes that the potential buyer she was speaking with may have been involved. (KTRK-TV)
- An enchanted date in Houston doesn't have to squeeze your wallet dry as long as you're familiar with the city. Boat tours, art viewings, and open-air performances are just a few of the things that you and your partner can enjoy on your night out without spending a single penny. Hermann Park offers both the beautiful Japanese Gardens and the possibility of catching a show hillside at Miller Outdoor Theater. There's also the love lock bridge on Allen Parkway where many a romantic have placed a permanent representation of their relationship by attaching a pad lock to the bridge and tossing away the key. From my notebook:
- The Astros defeated the Yankees last night 4-2 in the first game of the ALCS. The win is being largely credited to pitcher Justin Verlander who became the all-time post season leader in strikeouts over the course of the game. (ABC13 Houston via Facebook)
- Tonight is forecast to be the coldest night in Houston since March. It's probably a good idea to keep indoors unless you've been waiting for an opportunity to break out your winter clothing. (KHOU 11 News via Facebook)
- Minute Maid Park should be avoided at all costs as the Astros continue their series against the Yankees. If you do need to enter downtown, use the entrances and exits around City Hall and midtown. (ABC13 Houston via Facebook)
