Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. An art tour that's been described as "Fight Club for street artists" comes to Houston tonight at Karbach Brewing Company. Participating artists are split into teams and provided with artistic utensils including markers, paint brushes, spray paint, and paint rollers. Then, they are given 90 minutes to come up with their creation and complete their artwork. A panel of judges is present at the contest, but the winner is ultimately decided by whichever team receives louder cheers from the audience present. Food and drink, limited-time merch, and music by a live DJ will also be provided at the event. This is a great opportunity to check out some of Houston's up and coming artists for free, so don't miss out. (CultureMap Houston)
  2. Houston Second Baptist Church Pastor Ed Young is experiencing backlash after giving a sermon in which he claimed the Harris County Office bond issue is due to left-wing progressives in office. The pastor also claimed that Houston is one of the most dangerous cities in the nation due to increased crime. The sermon is one part in a series that seeks to teach churchgoers how a community of the faithful can overcome woke culture and return local customs to the biblical truth. Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner has already responded to the controversy, saying, "Houston is not the most dangerous city in America. That is factually not true, and people should not say it to gain some political benefit. Facts from the pulpit should matter." (Houston Style Magazine)
  3. The long-awaited dream of a Houston-Dallas bullet train mires as the company who is responsible for the project sees multiple leadership members leave. Texas Central High-Speed Railway once promised that the train would be operational by 2020, but over 10 years later not a single track has been laid down. A company spokesperson said, "Texas Central is continuing to seek further investment, and is moving forward with the development of this high-speed train." However, the company's website remains blank concerning its executive leaders, they currently have no job positions available, and land records reveal that the necessary land acquisition has stunted to a halt in the past couple of years. Will Dallas and Houston ever truly have a chance to get along? (Houston Public Media)
  4. A new list from Forbes puts NASA as the number one best employer in the state of Texas. The Johnson Space Center complex in Clear Lake employs over 3,000 NASA workers as well as thousands of other contractors. A look at NASA's website reveals that they provide, "a range of challenging projects that will make a difference to society. You need only find the intersection between talent, passion, and opportunity." The University of Texas Health Science Center, Oceaneering International, and MD Anderson Cancer Center all came close to gold in these most recent employer rankings. (CultureMap Houston)
  5. Former Rockets player John Wall opened up about his own struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts during his time playing for Houston. He shared his story in his hometown of Raleigh, North Carolina at a John Wall Foundation event for the Salvation Army. In the midst of the pandemic, Wall also had to deal with the added emotional impacts of "tearing my Achilles, my mom being sick, my mom passing, and my grandma passing a year later." He spoke about visiting his mom in chemotherapy and witnessing her take her last breath. Wall also advocated for mental health therapy, saying "You know a lot of people think, 'I don't need help, I can get through any times,' but you've got to be true to yourself and find out what's best for you, and I did that." The five-time NBA All-Star currently plays with the Los Angeles Clippers as point guard. (ABC13)
