Here are the top stories today in Houston:
- Houston-based coffee and tea company FreshBrew is expanding into a national brand after receiving a $10 million investment. FreshBrew has made and supplied packaged coffee and tea to Houston area convenience stores, grocers, and retail sectors since 1995, but this recent investment will allow them to create enough product to-go nationwide. President and CEO Al Ansari shared his own thoughts on the future of the coffee industry, "I think COVID really changed the game for everybody in doing business, especially in the coffee market — people want innovative products, flavored coffee, cold coffee now. We believe unique items will be the wave of the future — the companies that are the most nimble will succeed and I think that's what we do very well." (CultureMap Houston)
- An active shooter threat claiming to have killed 10 victims at Heights High School had parents fearing the worst but turned out to be a sham. HPD were on the scene within minutes of receiving the call, however, parents, some of whom rushed to the school to be met with police tape, didn't receive word on the situation until over an hour later. The school immediately entered lockdown, preventing any inside from escaping. Some parents are upset at the lack of communication from HPD. Police Chief Troy Finner said, "I'm a parent. I got a kid in HISD. But we got to use some kind of reason here. We have to search the school. That is the most important thing: to stop the threat if there is a threat. We don't have time to call. Once we make it safe, we start making those calls." (ABC13)
- A grown-up mini-golfing venue named Puttery opens this Friday on Washington Street as part of Sawyer Yards. Puttery's opening marks the Dallas-based chain's second location. Guests can expect to enjoy nine-holes of putting with digital score cards, a chic lounge with popular music, and food and alcoholic beverages from the bar. The Houston venue also offers an upstairs terrace, outdoor patio, and VIP lounges. If you've been waiting for a chance to prove your putting dominance, there's no better time than this weekend at Puttery. (Subscription/Houston Chronicle)
- Houston is kicking show production into high gear this theater season with Broadway knockout performances aplenty at local stages across town. In September you can see "Frozen" familiar "The Snow Queen" at Pearl Theater, the world premiere of a new comic show called "Ken Ludwig's Lend Me a Soprano," and "Bell, Book, and Candle" at Theatre Southwest in which a witch's attraction to her publisher leads to complications. A full list of all of the big shows coming to Houston over the next year can be found at the link attached. (Subscription/Houston Chronicle)
- Beto O'Rourke made a pit stop yesterday along his campaign trail at Houston's predominantly Hispanic neighborhood Segundo Barrio. O'Rourke fielded questions in Spanish from local community members whilst standing atop a cardboard box in the middle of a basketball court. The gubernatorial candidate's visit comes as Harris County has seen a notable spike in voter registration, especially among Hispanic women below the age of 45. Segundo Barrio native Susana Jimenez said, "We hold a lot of political power if our people would come out and vote." (KHOU.com)

- Houston drag queens who didn't make it to Lady Gaga's show at Minute Maid yesterday chose to put on dresses and ride their bikes through the city streets instead. The Pride Bike Ride bicycle event was called "Drag Them Out" and served as an opportunity for members of the LGBTQ+ community to be vulnerable in the public eye. (FOX 26 Houston via Facebook)
