Future Harris County DA Kim Ogg Sends Pink Slips to Prosecutors Via Email

Ogg fires 37 prosecutors nine days before Christmas.

HOUSTON, TX — Incoming Harris County district attorney Kim Ogg has already begun the process of rebranding the DA’s office, and said she plans to start with the termination of 37 prosecutors, including the prosecutor who handled the case of a woman who was jailed for a month to ensure her testimony against her rapist.

Nick Socias was among the dozens of prosecutors who were notified by email that their services would not be needed when Ogg takes office on Jan. 1.

The DA’s office employs about 300 lawyers, including bureau chiefs, division chiefs and trial chiefs.

Ogg defeated current Harris County DA Devon Anderson in the Nov. 8 election.

"Throughout the campaign, I promised Harris County an evidence-based approach to our criminal justice system," Ogg said in a statement. "This transition process is no different — decisions are being made based on what is best to assure Harris County is a safe and just place for all families.”

Anderson addressed the shake-up by releasing a statement of her own on Friday.
"Today, Kim Ogg fired by email 37 experienced prosecutors 9 days before Christmas. With her first act as District Attorney, Ogg is endangering the citizens of Harris County. The dedicated prosecutors let go today had a combined 685 years of service."
