🌱 Governor Parley + Vietnamese Afters

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Houston.

(Patch Media)

Wake up, Space City! It's me, Chris, your humble servant of the Houston Daily — coming right back at you with the plug on what's happening. Today, we'll look at:

  • An upcoming gubernatorial debate.
  • Vietnamese dessert chè.
  • Discriminatory illegal dumping responses.

First, today's weather:

An afternoon thunderstorm. High: 90 Low: 74.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Houston who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Houston Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top stories today in Houston:

  1. Gov. Greg Abbott and gubernatorial candidate Beto O'Rourke have agreed to have a debate on Sept. 30 in Edinburg, Texas. Abbott's campaign has indicated that it will be the only debate to occur before the election in November. The discourse will take place in the evening and last about an hour. The event will be accessible across all media markets and will be jointly hosted by news companies across Texas including the Houston Chronicle, The Dallas Morning News, The Texas Tribune, The Austin-American Statesman, and more. (KHOU11)
  2. A $7.5 million grant from the Wells Fargo Foundation will aid 5,000 Harris County renters of color in becoming homeowners by 2025. The grant was awarded to the Harris County Homeownership Collaborative as a part of the Wells Fargo Foundation's Wealth Opportunity Restored Through Homeownership, or WORTH, initiative. Houston is one among eight markets that have already seen awards from the project. WORTH was started due to Wells Fargo director Otis Rolley's belief that other parties must lend a hand to prevent the current racial homeownership gap from ballooning. 3. Houston is one of the best spots for Vietnamese food, but many Houstonians aren't aware that Vietnamese cuisine also offers a fabulous dessert known as chè. This sweet, colorful, and soupy afters is a mixture of creamy coconut milk topped with fruits, jellies, and/or tapioca. While similar to the popular and better known Taiwanese boba drinks, or "bubble tea," chè differs in that it provides a much creamier consistency and always comes from a base of coconut milk. Foodies who have had their curiosity piqued can try this iconic cultural drink at venues across town including Bambu, Duc Phuong Thach Che, Kim Sơn, Pho Ben, and Linda's Tropical Fruits. (Chron)
  4. Houston's new 300-foot detectable noise ordinance that went into effect yesterday requires businesses that use amplified outdoor sound to purchase commercial establishment sound permits. The new ordinance is a part of Mayor Sylvester Turner's "One Safe Houston" plan which seeks to answer rising crime rates across the city. Permits specify decibel limits on amplified sound at nighttime and also require that no amplified sound be played from 2 a.m. to 8 a.m. Ordinance supporters hope that the change will bring peace and quiet to Houston neighborhoods situated nearby late-night businesses. 5. The Department of Justice began investigations into claims that Houston has discriminated in response to illegal dumping taking place in communities of color. Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke, who is currently working the case, said, "Illegal dump sites not only attract rodents, mosquitoes and other vermin that pose health risks, but they can contaminate surface water and impact proper drainage making areas more susceptible to flooding. No one in the United States should be exposed to risk of illness and other serious harm because of ineffective solid waste management or inadequate enforcement programs." The DOJ will bore over 311 illegal dumping records and have already found trends that point to response times in communities of color being twice as long as those in communities such as River Oaks or Upper Kirby.
