GT Students Combine STEM and Service to Create Community Little Free Library

A group of gifted and talented students from Harmony Science Academy-City Place recently turned creativity into community impact by designing and building a new Little Free Library for their neighborhood, blending engineering, literacy, and teamwork into one hands-on project.

The project began in the classroom, where students created individual design concepts for the library. Each student sketched detailed plans featuring creative elements such as roofing styles, signage, post designs, lighting ideas, door features, and measurements. Students also explored modern technology by using a 3D printer to create custom signs for the finished structure.

Throughout the planning process, students worked collaboratively, sharing ideas and discussing which features would best fit the final design. Before construction began, the homeowners association (HOA) board provided several project guidelines to ensure the library would be both durable and compatible with neighborhood standards. The final structure was required to use treated wood for weather resistance, and the exterior finish needed to remain a neutral color to match the surrounding community.

Instead of choosing one single design, the final Little Free Library combined ideas from multiple student concepts. Features inspired by various student drawings included the decorative post design, lighting concepts, custom 3D-printed signage, a metal roof design, and a clear door panel inspired by student glass door ideas. The result was a collaborative project that reflected the creativity and input of several students.

On build day, students stepped into real-world STEM and engineering roles. They participated in hands-on activities such as digging and measuring the post hole, mixing concrete, checking post alignment with a level, and using a cordless drill under supervision to help assemble the structure.

The experience also introduced important construction safety lessons. Students learned why wearing safety glasses matters, how different tools function, and why contacting 811 before digging is an essential safety step for any construction project.

Beyond the technical skills, students strengthened teamwork, communication, problem-solving, and perseverance throughout the process.

Approximately 11 students participated directly in the project, with additional support from family members and staff during the build and installation.

Now complete and open to the public, the Little Free Library stands as a lasting example of how education, creativity, and community service can come together to make a meaningful impact, while encouraging reading and book sharing for families across the neighborhood.
